My easy chocolate avocado ice cream contains only 5 ingredients and it is deliciously creamy. It is a keto avocado ice cream recipe with 4.9 net carbs per serving. No ice cream maker necessary.
This avocado chocolate ice cream recipe has been on my website since February 2017. I have just updated the post with more info and tips to help you make it perfectly. The recipe itself has not changed!
What I love about this ice cream is that it is secretly healthy and simple at the same time. Plus, it tastes divine.
Here is what my reader Aaeysha commented: "I was BEYOND impressed! It was so easy to make and so delicious to eat. I served it for dessert and none of my family could tell it had avocado and all asked for seconds."ย

Ingredients
Here are the ingredients that you will need:
- Avocados: Choose ripe avocados with soft, green flesh. You can test for ripeness by gently pressing on the skin. It should give a little. I prefer buying ripe avocados over the ripen-at-home ones.
- Cacao powder: Cacao powder is made from raw, sundried cacao beans. This means it retains more nutrients than cocoa powder. Unsweetened cocoa powder (which is made by roasting the beans) works just as well though.
- Heavy cream: Adds creaminess to the ice cream.
- Coconut milk: From a can (not the milk replacement in a carton)
- Sugar Substitute - The first time I made this recipe, I used powdered erythritol. This works well, but the ice cream does set quite hard. Today, I recommend that you make any keto ice cream with allulose for a smooth and creamy result.
I also used cocoa nibs. These are crushed pieces of cacao. Of course, you can use dark or sugar-free chocolate chips instead - or omit them altogether.
See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Why Avocado?
Avocado is one of my favorite ingredients in desserts. It is creamy and rich and once you combine it with chocolate, you cannot taste it at all.
On top of that, it has many health benefits: Avocado is...
- packed with more potassium than bananas
- loaded with healthy fatty acids and antioxidants
- full of fibre.
Instructions
Here is how to make avocado chocolate ice cream at home in three simple steps:
STEP 1: Put all ingredients in a food processor or high-speed blender. Blend until smooth.
STEP 2: Adjust the sweetener to taste and stir in the cocoa nibs, if using.
STEP 3: Fill the mixture into a container that you have lined with parchment paper. Freeze for 4-6 hours or until set.
Katrin's Top Tips
#1 It is best that you add the wet ingredients first and the cacao powder last. This way, it does not stick to the bowl. Also, scrape down the sides of the blender in between if necessary.
#2 Take your time! Blend until the mixture is completely uniform. You don't want to find any green bits in your ice cream later.
#3 If frozen overnight, let the ice cream defrost for 20 minutes before attempting to scoop.
Hacks For Soft Ice Cream
No-churn ice cream is always less creamy than ice cream that has been made with an ice cream maker. This is because the ice crystals that form during the freezing process are not broken down by movement.
Here are optional tricks for the softest keto avocado ice cream:
- Use allulose as a sweetener
- Add 1 tablespoon of vodka
- Add a pinch of gelatine (I used this in my keto chocolate ice cream)
- Stir in a tablespoon of melted coconut oil or MCT oil
Last but not least, you can also freeze the ice cream in ice cube trays. Then, whizz the cubes in a high-speed blender with a splash of nut milk and serve as a soft serve.
Variations
Dairy Free: Use coconut cream instead of dairy cream.
Avocado Ice Cream: Omit the cocoa powder and add 1-2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.
Matcha Ice Cream: Make the avocado ice cream with vanilla extract and also add 3 teaspoons of matcha powder. Super-green ice cream with antioxidant superpowers!
Add-ins
- Crushed frozen raspberries for a colour pop.
- Chopped nuts such as pistachios or pecans for more crunch.
- Make chocolate cookie dough ice cream with my keto cookie dough
- Add a caramel swirl with this keto caramel sauce
- Stir in a pinch of sea salt
Recipe FAQs
Yes, but I have not tried it yet. In theory, it should be possible to use blueberries raspberries or strawberries in place of cocoa powder. I have done it with smoothies such as my Avocado Strawberry Smoothie and this Avocado Blueberry Smoothie.
Of course. Simply prepare the mixture as described and then churn it in the ice cream machine as per the manufacturer's instructions. Probably about 20 minutes. Serve as a soft serve or freeze until scoopable.
Yes. Fill the mixture into popsicle moulds. Option to dip the popsicles into melted chocolate right before serving, like did with my Sugar Free Mexican Chocolate Fudgesicles.
If carbs are not a concern, feel free to use honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar or even dates to sweeten the ice cream.
Storage
Store chocolate avocado ice cream like you would regular ice cream: In an airtight container in the freezer. It stays fresh for up to 3 months.
Let it sit on the counter to soften before scooping.

Thank you for your lovely posts, everything sounds so delish and satisfying to my sweet tooth! Unluckily, my digestive system just won't tolerate all the creamy goodness found in dairy products so I'm just wondering if you think I can make this with some type of non-dairy milk like Cashew, Ripple 1/2 and 1/2, Soy, etc.? Thank you for any suggestions....
Katrin Nรผrnberger
Of course! If you want to omit the cream and replace with a nut milk, I'd recommend you use an ice cream machine, to make sure the ice cream stays nice and spoonable.
Rhian
Hi Katrin,
Can I substitute agave syrup for the stevia in this recipe? What quantity/volume of agave syrup do you think would be a suitable amount as an alternative sweetener?
Many thanks!
Rhian
Katrin Nรผrnberger
Hi Rhian, I've never used agave, but I think it's as sweet as honey. I'd probably use the same amount as stated in the recipe - 1/2 cup. To make sure you get it right, why not use 1/4 cup first, then taste, and then continue adding until it has the sweetness you like.
Aaeysha
I don't know why I tried this recipe. I'm not even a chocolate ice cream lover. Your recipe has literally converted me. I had all the ingredients on hand, including the cacao nibs--which initially I thought were too bitter--,so I decided to give this a try. I was BEYOND impressed! It was soo easy to make and soo delicious to eat. I especially loved the crunch of the nibs, couldn't taste any bitterness here. If anyone makes this recipe don't skip the nibs!. And OMG Avocado for desert? What an amazing way to end the day, or start it? I served it for desert and none of my family could tell it had avocado and all asked for seconds. Thank you so much for this recipe!
Katrin Nรผrnberger
Hi Aaeysha, I'm so happy I convinced you with this one!!! People are often hesitant about the chocolate avocado combo ๐
Wanda
For the icecream to be softer when taken out of freezer add some melted virgin coconut oil to the mix.
No need to leave it out to soften. Such a delicious recipe Katrin, thank you
Katrin Nรผrnberger
That's such a good tip! Thanks Wanda
Ingrid
How much of coconut oil did you add to the recipe pls, to get the right ice-cream softened texture?
Susan
Hi katrin.
Your recipes are awesome!... love the biscotti !
Havenโt tried this one yet, but better believe I will!.
I love pistachio ice cream! If anyone can make it lowcarb, itโs you!
Please tell me you have a recipe for keto pistachio ice cream
Thx,
Susan
Katrin Nรผrnberger
You know what? I love pistachio ice cream too! I shall make a recipe this summer ๐
Erica
Hypothetically, if you didnโt finish it all in a couple of days, How long does it keep?
Katrin
I'd say a couple of months in the freezer.
shree raman
Delicious and the process is so easy. Thank you for sharing.
Ivana
I recommend to everyone to do directly double portion, because 1/2 of the portion will not even make it to the freezer!!!
Cathy
I put my ice cream in a silicone tray that has 2 inch squares and place a popsicle stick in each one. I don't have to wait for the ice cream to soften, I just pop it out and start licking!
Katrin
What a BRILLIANT idea!!!!!!! Love it
