Sugar free frozen yogurt is a light and refreshing dessert and a healthy alternative to ice cream. Learn how to make homemade frozen yogurt with just 3 ingredients!
Sugar free froyo is the most delicious way to cool down in summer!
My easy vanilla froyo recipe tastes amazing on its own, but you can also use it for all kinds of flavour experiments. Strawberry, chocolate, peanut butter, coffee, cookie dough...
The recipe is so simple and you don't even need an ice cream maker - which always takes up way too much space! Also, it has fewer calories and fat than my beloved sugar free ice cream.
Chances are you have the ingredients right now in your kitchen. Let's get started right away:

Ingedients
Yogurt - I recommend full-fat Greek yogurt as it is nice and creamy. Fage is a brand I use often. It has a mild taste.
Sweetener - For a truly sugar-free frozen yogurt, I recommend allulose as a sweetener. This is the only zero-carb sugar substitute that does not recrystallise at all. It will yield a totally smooth result, just like sugar! I am listing more sweetener options further down.
Vanilla Extract - In my opinion, vanilla is essential to elevate the flavor. A quality vanilla extract is totally fine. If you want to splash out, scrape out the seeds from a fresh vanilla bean and use those instead.
Instructions
It is very simple to make homemade frozen yogurt. There are 3 different methods to choose from:
- Ice cube and blender method (the quickest and easiest!)
- Ice cream maker method (the creamiest)
- Basic method (the most time-consuming - but it works if you have neither a blender nor an ice cream maker)
My preferred method is #1:
Ice Cube and Blender Method
Step 1
Whisk the yogurt, sweetener of your choice and vanilla extract in a large mixing bowl. Taste and adjust sweetener if necessary.
Step 2
Fill the mixture into ice cube trays and freeze until set. Trays that make smaller cubes are better as blending becomes easier later.
Step 3
Empty the yogurt cubes into a high-speed blender. Use the tamper tool to push down the cubes while blending until smooth.
Step 4
Serve straight away as a soft serve. For scoop-able frozen yogurt, fill the mixture into a tray. Cover with clingfilm and return it to the freezer for another 2 hours until set.
Ice Cream Maker Method
Step 1
Freeze the ice cream canister overnight. The next day, churn the prepared yogurt mixture in the ice cream machine according to manufacturer's directions. In my machine, this takes around 15 to 20 minutes.
Step 2
Serve straight away or return to the freezer for a firmer, scoop-able yogurt.
The No Blender No Churn Method
This method takes a little patience and it is not as creamy as the other 2 methods! However, if you have neither ice cream maker nor a blender, it works just fine.
Step 1
First, freeze the mixture in a shallow container. Remove it from the freezer every 30 minutes and stir with a spoon or spatula, breaking up the ice crystals. These form on the outside and especially in the corners of the container.
Step 2
Flatten the mixture and return to the freezer. Repeat this process every half hour for 3 hours until the yogurt is set.
Variations
Now that you know the basic sugar free frozen yogurt recipe, let's chat about variations. Because plain vanilla is just the starting point!
Chocolate: Add 3 tablespoons cocoa powder into the yogurt before freezing and increase the sweetener by 2 tablespoons.
Peanut butter: Add 6 tablespoons of runny peanut butter and increase the sweetener by 2 tablespoons.
Mint: Add 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the yogurt mixture. You can even mix in finely chopped mint leaves.
Coffee: Stir in 2 teaspoons of instant coffee and increase the sweetener. This is a refreshing summer dessert, perfect in place of an after-dinner espresso.
Fruity: You can blend any fruit of your choice into the yogurt and adjust the amount of sweetener to taste. Strawberry, blackberry, peach or even mango if that's your thing. I also have an easy recipe for raspberry frozen yogurt to try.
I have also made a lemon version by adding 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. It did taste good, however, I think I still prefer my classic sugar free lemon sorbet.
Recipe FAQs
In theory you can, although the recipe will likely not be a sugar free frozen yogurt and more. Most store-bought flavoured yogurts contain added sugar.
Choose a dairy-free yogurt of your preference. In my opinion, coconut yogurt works the best, because it is high in fat and very creamy.
Powdered xylitol is the next best option after allulose and powdered Bocha Sweet also works. Avoid erythritol-based sweeteners because they recrystallise as they cool and the end result will taste gritty. If carbs are not a concern, feel free to replace the allulose with coconut sugar, honey or maple syrup.
Replace half of the yogurt with heavy cream or coconut cream.
Pour the yogurt mixture into a large tray lined with parchment paper, just like I did with my matcha frozen yogurt. Once it is frozen, break the bark into pieces and blend.
Serving Suggestion
Frozen yogurt is always more exciting with toppings! Here are some of our tried and tested favourites:
- Sugar-free chocolate chips
- keto cookie dough
- Sugar free strawberry sauce
- Caramel sauce
- Chocolate sauce
- Chopped walnuts or pecans
Naturally, the easiest way to serve frozen yogurt is with strawberries or any other berries, as shown in the images.
Storage
I store sugar free frozen yogurt in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2 months. You need to know that it does set hard as it does not contain any additives and very little fat.
Remove it from the freezer 20-30 minutes before eating so it has time to soften and becomes scoop-able.

This was so easy to make and perfectly refreshing. I love that the allulose doesn't allow the frozen yogurt to freeze rock hard like other sugar free ice creams do.
Gina
I made this with honey as I didn't have allulose and was floored at how delicious and creamy it tastes! Love enjoying this with fresh berries for a treat.
