Coffee lovers, start the day with my easy keto coffee smoothie! This creamy, filling low carb breakfast drink is ready in just 3 minutes. It is the perfect keto coffee protein shake for everyone who prefers dairy free.

I love coffee so much that I look forward to it every night I go to sleep. Seriously, coffee makes me that happy.
The aromatic smell and the flavor are impossible to replace with a cup of tea... I was probably Italian in a former life.
This keto coffee shake is one of my go-to quick breakfasts. It is brilliant when you have leftover cold brew coffee from the day before.
I seriously think it tastes better than the Starbucks frappuccino. I love the creamy texture and the frothy topping. I also love that it is over 20 grams of protein!
Serve with keto breakfast cookies and you are set for the day.

Ingredients
This is what you'll need for a keto coffee smoothie:

Brewed coffee - Make it to your preferences. I have a Nespresso machine, but using a cafetiere, coffee machine or even instant coffee made with granules works. Make sure it is cold and strong.
Collagen powder - Collagen makes the recipe super creamy and high protein. It is also amazing for your gut health, skin, hair and nails. I often use collagen peptides to thicken milkshakes like this keto chocolate milkshake.
Coconut milk - Needs to be full fat (about 20g fat per 100ml) from a can. Coconut milk is rich in healthy saturated fats called medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). Read more about the benefits of coconut milk here.
Peanut butter - Adds healthy fat and more protein
Ice cubes - Help make your keto coffee shake thick and frothy.
Vanilla extract and powdered sweetener - Optional. Vanilla adds a lovely flavor. If you like a sweet sugar free coffee smoothie, use powdered and not granulated sweetener. Erythritol, monk fruit blends, stevia or allulose - you choose.
Instructions
It's really simple to make a high protein keto coffee shake. In fact, it's just 2 steps:

Step 1: Put all ingredients in a high speed blender and whizz until smooth.
Step 2: Pour everything into a cup and drink straight away.
Katrin's Top Tips
#1 Use cold coffee. If it is still warm, the smoothie will be less thick.
#2 Kitchen hack: Freeze the brewed coffee in ice cube trays. Then, put the coffee ice cubes straight into the blender and add the rest of the ingredients.
Variations
Change the fat: Swap the peanut butter for almond butter or any other nut butter or seed butter. Or, add 1 tablespoon of MCT oil.
Keto mocha smoothie: Add 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder and drizzle sugar free chocolate sauce over the top.
Use dairy: Heavy cream works in place of the coconut milk. This also lowers the net carbs slightly. Option to add whipped cream on top to make a proper coffee milkshake.
No high speed blender? Make keto iced coffee! Simply whizz all ingredients apart from the ice cubes with an immersion blender and add the ice cubes last.

FAQs
Yes. If you use instant coffee, consider making it with unsweetened almond milk instead of water to make the coffee keto shake even creamier.
Unflavoured or vanilla whey protein powder. Or how about chocolate protein powder to make a chocolate coffee protein shake?
You can use coconut oil, coconut cream or heavy cream like I did in this Keto Iced Coffee. Regular cappuccinos and lattes are made with milk. Due to its high lactose and carb content, milk is not a good option on keto.
No, it is not. Bulletproof coffee is a hot coffee that contains butter or ghee and MTC oil. It tastes like an extremely creamy latte and is very filling thanks to the high fat content.
Storage
I don't recommend making this keto coffee smoothie ahead or storing it in the fridge as it will become more watery. It is best fresh and I recommend that you drink it straight away.

Hi, Katrin - I made this today, following your instructions (I even weighed the ice cubes because mine are shaped differently); I used instant coffee made with almond milk, put it in the fridge to get cold, added some cinnamon and sweetener, and whizzed away on the smoothie setting of my blender, which is set on high speed.
I've never had a Frappuccino, let alone one from Starbuck's, so I can't really compare it on that level, but I didn't find it "creamy"; it tasted pretty good but it was the consistency of the almond milk. There was, however, quite a bit of froth on top, which was definitely creamy and tasty.
Is this how it was supposed to turn out? If not, could I have done something differently?
Katrin Nürnberger
If you make the recipe with almond milk instead of coconut cream, it will not turn out creamy. Almond milk is very low in fat. The coconut cream adds creaminess, as does the whey protein powder because it thickens the drink.

Actually, thinking about it, I was planning on using heavy cream, but maybe I had a senior moment and used almond milk instead. I say this because if I actually had used the heavy cream it would have turned out creamy, right?
Also, your recipe calls for coconut milk from a can, but your reply to my comment mentions coconut cream; I'm assuming the recipe is correct?
Katrin Nürnberger
Oh, yes, I meant coconut milk, from a can. This is thick and creamy.

Thanks for the 5 star recipe! I add avocado, cocoa, MCT oil & protein powder (mesquite). I substitute coffee with instant decaf in almond milk & peanut butter for almond butter. I also double the sweetener. This is my new favorite smoothie!

Do you have a Mocha Latte recipe?
Katrin Nürnberger
Not yet, but you could use my sugar free hot chocolate and add espresso.

Hi,
Is the 4oz ice cube by weight or measured in a measuring cup? We don't have an ice maker, so we buy bags ice, and it comes in chunks, not cubes. Thank you. I'm getting ready to have all my top teeth pulled before getting Implanted Dentures, so I'm needing lots of low carb smoothie recipes, as I won't be able to eat solid foods for several months, except for soft foods, which are usually high in carbs, very high in carbs. In the beginning, I will only be able to have liquids, so I really appreciate all the drink recipes you'd share.
Katrin Nürnberger
Hi Kiki, I weighed the ice cubes with a digital scale. Good luck with your surgery, hope you'll recover soon.
Kiki
Hi, Katrin,
Thank you so much for the instructions and well wishes. I Pinned some of your other smoothie recipes. I look forward to trying them all.
