My easy protein pudding is chocolatey, extra creamy and secretly healthy! It contains 19 grams of protein per serving. This high protein pudding recipe is low carb, keto and ready to eat in 3 minutes.
Recently, I have been all about adding more protein into my diet. And I am not just talking about eating eggs, meat and fish - but also high protein desserts!
I started with this awesome protein banana bread and then made an equally yummy peanut butter protein fluff.
But if you know me, you'll know that I love anything chocolate. That's why today, I'd like to introduce you to my healthy chocolate protein pudding.
I could literally eat this every day, it is that good.

Why I Love This Recipe
It is delicious. This pudding tastes just like a heavenly naughty chocolate mousse. It has a creamy yet airy texture and deep, deep chocolate flavor.
Easy and quick. One of the major benefits of this dessert is that it is incredibly simple. All you need is a blender, and 3 minutes later you can dig in.
It is sugar free and low carb. My pre-diabetic husband and my diabetic mother-in-law can enjoy this recipe for protein pudding without worrying about their blood sugar levels.
It is light. One portion contains only 149 calories and 5.7g of fat. I am not actively avoiding fat in my diet, but sometimes it is great to enjoy a light dessert, especially in summer.
Protein! I find that protein really improves my energy levels and it makes me feel fuller for longer. Here is an interesting article why protein is good for you. My recipe contains not one, but two ingredients that are naturally high in protein - cottage cheese and whey protein powder.
In summary: Eating dessert and being healthy at the same time - it doesn't get much better than that!
Ingredients
See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
- Cottage Cheese: Any cottage cheese works - low fat, full fat, large curd or small curd. Many people don't like the texture of cottage cheese. Trust me, blended cottage cheese tastes deliciously creamy. Also, use it straight from the fridge so the pudding is firm, cool and ready to eat straight away.
- Protein Powder: My go-to is unflavoured whey protein powder. Whey is creamier in puddings than any other protein powder I have tried. (I also like to use whey in low carb baking to achieve a finer crumb texture.)
- Cocoa Powder: Use 100% unsweetened cocoa powder.
- Sweetener: Since this is a sugar-free blog, I recommend using allulose, which is a zero-carb sugar alternative. Allulose melts just like sugar and is perfect for mousses and puddings. Powdered erythritol monk fruit blends or xylitol are also fine (adjust the amounts as per suggestion in the recipe card). If carbs are not a concern, feel free to use coconut sugar or honey.
- Vanilla extract: The vanilla covers the tanginess of the cottage cheese. I recommend it to achieve that proper chocolate mousse flavor.
Instructions
It is simple to make a chocolate protein pudding with protein powder! All it takes is 2 steps.
Scroll down to the recipe card for ingredient amounts and nutrition information.
STEP 1
Put all ingredients in a food processor.
STEP 2
Blend until smooth. Scrape down the sides in between with a spatula until everything is incorporated.
Katrin's Top Tip
If you don't have a food processor, mix the ingredients in a tall, narrow jug with an immersion blender.
Variations
No cottage cheese? Ricotta or Greek yogurt are good alternatives to cottage cheese. However, they are not as high in protein as cottage cheese. That said, I made a delicious chocolate yogurt recently that you should definitely try as well.
Chocolate protein powder: I only ever have unflavored whey protein powder in the house, because it is versatile. But, you could make protein chocolate pudding with chocolate-flavoured protein powder. In this case, I recommend using 4 tablespoons of protein powder and add an additional tablespoon of cocoa powder for a deeper chocolate taste. You probably won't need any additional sweetener.
Vanilla protein pudding: Not a fan of chocolate? Use a vanilla protein powder instead. Option to add a tablespoon of peanut butter as well (peanut butter is high in protein).
Dairy-free protein pudding: Soy yogurt has the most protein, while almond or coconut yogurt contain very little. Instead of whey, use pea protein or hemp protein.
Serving Suggestion
Protein pudding tastes great with any toppings that work for regular chocolate pudding:
- Toasted nuts (hazelnuts, almonds, pecans)
- Sugar free whipped cream
- A dusting of cocoa powder
- Chocolate chips or cocoa nibs
- Melted chocolate - I recommend using 90% dark chocolate such as Lindt
- Berries (blueberries, raspberries, red currants, strawberries), as seen in the image below.
Note - I made a quick berry coulis by cooking raspberries, blueberries and red currants with a little sweetener. But, fresh berries work just fine.
Recipe FAQs
I'm glad you asked. First of all, you'll save money over any shop-bought chocolate pudding. And secondly, making protein pudding at home means it'll be SO MUCH HEALTHIER. Ready-made protein puddings contain gums, artificial sweeteners and thickeners. My recipe is clean, healthy and uses only natural ingredients.
Here's how to make easy protein chocolate ice cream: Freeze the pudding for 90 minutes or until it is half-frozen. Then, blend it briefly in the food processor or a high speed blender to a soft-serve consistency.
The tanginess of the cottage cheese is very prominent if you leave out the sweetener. I tried it and decided the pudding was 100% better with sweetener. However, the sugar substitute is not essential for the texture.
Storage
Store the protein pudding in the fridge for up to 4 days. I cover it with clingfilm or store it in an airtight container so it stays fresh.
I do not recommend freezing cottage cheese pudding. Cottage cheese changes texture after defrosting.

Yum Yum. Made this yesterday, got 3 portions in similar dishes, small mousse ones. I used raw cacao powder and less than 1tbsp of erythritol sweetener. No allulose on Amazon link btw. Finely grated orange rind is ace. Really rich tasting, gooey texture and very filling. Thanks
Christine

Hi, Katrin - here in Ocala, Florida I can only find whey protein powder in pretty large quantities and it's expensive. Is there a substitute that will work?
Katrin Nรผrnberger
Hi Addie, I have only tried the pudding with whey protein, but I am pretty sure that any other protein powder (hemp, pea) would work as well. Perhaps you can find a smaller pack of protein powder on Amazon?
Addie
I already tried Amazon with the same results; I'll check out my local health food store next, and if that fails I'll keep looking because that pudding looks irresistible!
I'm guessing from your reply that there's no substitute for some kind of protein powder.
Katrin Nรผrnberger
Hi Addie, if you drain the cottage cheese so it is nice and firm, you can probably make the recipe without the protein powder.
Allison
I made this without letting my cottage cheese hater Husband know what the ingredients were. Needless to say he loved it and licked the bowl clean saying "would definitely have that again" he he. Thank you, yet another 5 star recipe
