My easy chocolate avocado ice cream contains only 5 ingredients and it is deliciously creamy. It is a keto avocado ice cream recipe with 4.9 net carbs per serving. No ice cream maker necessary.
Enter chocolate avocado ice cream.
Avocado with its rich, creamy texture is the ideal candidate for no-bake desserts. On top of that, it has an insane amount of health benefits. Avocado is...
- packed with more potassium than bananas
- loaded with healthy fatty acids
- full of fibre
- brimming with antioxidants.
I have posted this chocolate avocado mousse already, which is a ridiculously easy dessert. Avocado and chocolate work just so well together. Combined they are rich and indulgent, yet with a pleasingly fresh note. Chocolate avocado ice cream seemed the next natural step, even though it's February. Or maybe because it's February. Don't we all need something to look forward to?
I don't have an ice-cream maker - if you do, you can still use this recipe and probably get an impossibly silky result. But it works just as well without. All you need is a little more planning and patience. Enjoy!
Ingredients
Here are the ingredients that you will need:
- Avocados: Choose ripe avocados with soft, green flesh and no black spots. You can test for ripeness by gently pressing on the skin. It should give a little. I prefer buying ripe avocados over the ripen-at-home ones.
- Cacao powder: Cacao powder is made from raw, sundried cacao beans. This means it retains more nutrients than cocoa powder. Unsweetened cocoa powder works just as well though.
- Heavy cream: Adds creaminess to the ice cream.
- Coconut milk: From a can (not the milk replacement in a carton)
- Sugar Substitute - The first time I made this recipe, I used powdered erythritol. This works well, but the ice cream does set quite hard. Today, I recommend that you make any keto ice cream with allulose for a smooth and creamy result.
I also used cocoa nibs. These are crushed pieces of cacao. Of course, you can also use dark or sugar-free chocolate chips - or omit them altogether.
See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Instructions
Here is how to make avocado chocolate ice cream at home in three simple steps:
STEP 1: Put all ingredients in a food processor or high-speed blender. Blend until smooth.
STEP 2: Adjust the sweetener to taste and stir in the cocoa nibs, if using.
STEP 3: Fill the mixture into a container that you have lined with parchment paper. Freeze for 4-6 hours or until set.
Katrin's Top Tips
#1 It is best that you add the wet ingredients first and the cacao powder last. This way, it does not stick to the sides. Also, scrape down the sides of the blender in between if necessary.
#2 Take your time! Blend until the mixture is completely uniform. You don't want to find any green bits in your ice cream later.
#3 If frozen overnight, let the ice cream defrost for 20 minutes before attempting to scoop.
Hacks For Soft Ice Cream
No-churn ice cream is always less creamy than ice cream that has been made with an ice cream maker. This is because the ice crystals that form during the freezing process are not broken down by movement.
Here are tricks for soft keto-friendly ice cream:
- Use allulose as a sweetener
- Add 1 tablespoon of vodka
- Add a pinch of gelatine
- Stir in a tablespoon of melted coconut oil or MCT oil
Last but not least, you can also freeze the ice cream in ice cube trays. Then, whizz the cubes in a high-speed blender with a splash of nut milk and serve as a soft serve.
Variations
Dairy Free: Use coconut cream instead of dairy cream.
Avocado Ice Cream: Omit the cocoa powder and add 1-2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.
Matcha Ice Cream: Make the avocado ice cream with vanilla extract and also add 3 teaspoons of matcha powder. Super-green ice cream with antioxidant superpowers!
Add-ins: Stir crushed raspberries into the mixture for a colour pop. Add chopped nuts such as pistachios or pecans for more crunch. Or, make chocolate cookie dough ice cream with my keto cookie dough.
Recipe FAQs
Yes, but I have not tried it yet. In theory, it should be possible to use blueberries raspberries or strawberries in place of cocoa powder. I have done it with smoothies such as my Avocado Strawberry Smoothie and this Avocado Blueberry Smoothie.
Of course. Simply prepare the mixture as described and then churn it in the ice cream machine as per the manufacturer's instructions. Probably about 20 minutes. Serve as a soft serve or freeze until scoopable.
Yes. Fill the mixture into popsicle moulds. Option to dip the popsicles into melted chocolate right before serving, like did with my Sugar Free Mexican Chocolate Fudgesicles.
If carbs are not a concern, feel free to use honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar or even dates to sweeten the ice cream.
Storage
Store avocado chocolate ice cream like you would regular ice cream: In an airtight container in the freezer. It stays fresh for up to 3 months.
Let it sit on the counter to soften before scooping.

Hi Katrin - could I replace the double cream with coconut cream to make this vegan? X
Katrin Nürnberger
Yes, that would work.

Your recipe connects to Amazon BochaSweet which Amazon does not have and does not know if they will get it again.. What other sweetener do you recommend? I have Alulose and monk fruit 1-2 blend. Would the Alulose keep it smoother? Thanks for any reply I would like to try this recipe for my husband who is prediabetic.
Katrin Nürnberger
Low carb ice cream is best with allulose, as it will keep it smooth and creamy.

Very good recipe!

I love this recipe and the idea in general too, much thanks for posting it! A quick question, I love whey protein, do you have any suggestions for incorporating it into the recipe effectively?
Katrin Nürnberger
I'm sure you could simply add a little into the recipe without issues.
Rachael
Could I make this ice cream a different flavour? Vanilla, strawberry, anything really. I'm not a chocolate fan, but I prefer this recipe to your more traditional ice creams as it is easier to convert it to plant based.
Katrin Nürnberger
You can definitely do that, if you think of it as avocado ice cream with a flavour. You could add vanilla extract or scrape out a vanilla bean. You could also consider adding my sugar free strawberry jam - that way the flavour will be more intense than if you just used fresh strawberries.

HI, can the coconut milk be substitued with normal milk or some other type of milk. I just do not like coconut milk.
Katrin Nürnberger
You could use more cream instead. Regular milk will be too watery, unless you're using an ice cream maker.
Denise
Added some chocolate chips and some chopped walnuts for a rocky road theme.
John Mcmahon
What are cocoa nibs?
Katrin Nürnberger
Hi John, they are small pieces of crushed cacao beans.
John Mcmahon

Thank you for your lovely posts, everything sounds so delish and satisfying to my sweet tooth! Unluckily, my digestive system just won't tolerate all the creamy goodness found in dairy products so I'm just wondering if you think I can make this with some type of non-dairy milk like Cashew, Ripple 1/2 and 1/2, Soy, etc.? Thank you for any suggestions....
Katrin Nürnberger
Of course! If you want to omit the cream and replace with a nut milk, I'd recommend you use an ice cream machine, to make sure the ice cream stays nice and spoonable.
Rhian
Hi Katrin,
Can I substitute agave syrup for the stevia in this recipe? What quantity/volume of agave syrup do you think would be a suitable amount as an alternative sweetener?
Many thanks!
Rhian
Katrin Nürnberger
Hi Rhian, I've never used agave, but I think it's as sweet as honey. I'd probably use the same amount as stated in the recipe - 1/2 cup. To make sure you get it right, why not use 1/4 cup first, then taste, and then continue adding until it has the sweetness you like.
